[Phone Lens Tutorial-1] Portrait Shots by Single Camera using 12x Zoom Lens (Blurry Background)

Welcome to the phone lens tutorial series. We are starting a series of tutorial on phone lenses (How to, when to, tips and tricks etc.). Today, we will see how a single camera phone can capture dual camera like portrait photos with blurry background.
Requirements:

  • Any smartphone (Mi6 is used but shot only with one camera and dual camera is not used)
  • A zoom Lens (More Magnification, more blur) we will use 12x zoom lens for demonstration

Description of 12x Zoom Lens:

- A zoom lens is a type of lens which can reduce the distance between the object and the lens by its magnification. In this case the 12x zoom lens can reduce the distance by 12 times.

- The zoom magnification of 12x is fixed for the lens, however, the beauty is that you can change the focus of the lens by rotating the focusing ring as shown below.

- The lens has no black borders on the image unlike other cheap zoom lenses.

Steps:

  • Fix the Clip in the center of the camera without the lens.
  • Fix the zoom lens on the clip.
  • Now rotate the focus ring to get perfect focus on any subject.

Tips:

  • To get a blurry background distance between the object and the lens must be lowest.
  • The minimum focusing distance of the 12x lens is approximately 1 meter. So, maintain the distance between your lens and object to 1 meter so that you will get a very nice blurry background.
  • To get the lowest focus rotate the focusing ring to the leftmost side.
  • Place the object at the middle of your photo to get rid of the lens distortion.

Other advantages of the Zoom lens is that you can see through long distance. Check out below images.

Disadvantage:

  • Like everything comes with pros and cons this lens has also some disadvantages.
  • The quality of the images will be reduced drastically due to distortion. it is true for all zoom lenses for phone. However, you can improve the quality using the image editing software or app.
  • Images will have chromatic aberration. You can remove that using photoshop or any advanced software.
  • Sometimes you will get blurry images due to wrong focus or shaky hands. A tripod is highly recommended for that.
